There’s humongous fiber cable that connects the colocation holding the company servers with the long-haul network and thence the rest of the world. Earlier this week that cable and the conduit it goes through had an unfortunate encounter with some unrelated construction equipment. This took out not only us but several thousand other customers of the site. Kudos to the staff of the site and the crew tasked with reconnecting several hundred individual fiber connections in the cable, at both ends of the damaged section. They kept us up to date with roughly hourly progress reports over the three days of outage. Fascinating, really, kind of like standing near a construction site and watching through a hole in the fence as someone pirouettes a steel beam from a crane. I now know what a “butt splice” is 🙂
But we’re back up. Back to work.
