IMHO, “Great Microprocessors of the Past and Present (V 13.4.0)” by John Bayko, online as of today at: http://www.cpushack.com/CPU/cpu.html
is worth a look and serves pretty well as a prequel to the article linked by the O.P. Bayko’s article is focused on single-chip (or at least few chip) CPU designs. Greatness is a matter of opinion, but I generally find myself agreeing with the author more often than not. Enjoy!
