I thought I’d start a thread to provide a home for documents about the fundamentals of CPU architecture, from annotated glossaries to research papers.
To get things started, here’s a link that talks about the basic differences between superscalar and superpipelined, with comparisons to specific CPU architectures:
http://www.lighterra.com/papers/modernmicroprocessors/
It’s from 2001, but the principles it describes still apply.
People who are interested in CPU design in general might want to hang out on the comp.arch newsgroup. It is quite active, and covers many topics that are outside the specific Mill domain that you see in these forums.
Incidentally, would you consider bringing that article up-to-date by including the Mill design and contrasting it with the other approaches?
IMHO, “Great Microprocessors of the Past and Present (V 13.4.0)” by John Bayko, online as of today at: http://www.cpushack.com/CPU/cpu.html
is worth a look and serves pretty well as a prequel to the article linked by the O.P. Bayko’s article is focused on single-chip (or at least few chip) CPU designs. Greatness is a matter of opinion, but I generally find myself agreeing with the author more often than not. Enjoy! There is a remarkably good overview of the public Mill at http://liberomnia.org/wiki/Computer/The_Mill.en.html. Does anyone have a clue who the author might be? If it’s you, please stick up your hand!
